Sympoietic Practices in Bio Arts and Bio Fabrication” connects theory and practice in bio arts and biofabrication. Students engage with non-human organisms, experiment hands-on, and develop sustainable artistic and material-based practices in a process-oriented course
“Sympoietic Practices in Bio Arts and Bio Fabrication” is an interdisciplinary course in bio arts and biofabrication, combining theory and practice through critical reflection, hands-on experimentation. Students engage with non-human organisms as active collaborators, moving beyond theoretical speculation to develop a sustainable artistic and material-based practice. The course is structured around sympoiesis (“making-with”), requiring students to research and understand their chosen species before starting practical work. They document their processes, reflect on ethical and societal implications, and refine their approaches through species research, manifesto writing, lab work, and iterative experimentation. The course takes place in an arts-based Biofabrication Lab, where students have access to specialised tools while learning safe and responsible working methods. While not a traditional science lab, safety, care, and sustainability are key components. Assessment is process-based, focusing on engagement, reflection, and concept development rather than fixed outcomes.By integrating artistic and design practices with material and organism research, the course fosters competency-based learning. It prepares students to become research-driven, sustainable, and responsible creators while also contributing thoughtfully to the broader field of bio arts, bio design, and bio fabrication.m,
